Helpful Information to Know Before Visiting Norway

Here’s some super useful info to know about Norway before planning your visit, it’ll help you make the most of your vacation!

    All About Campervans in Norway

Norway is one of Europe's most campervan-friendly destinations. When you rent a campervan in Norway, you can park overnight for free almost anywhere, as long as it's at least 150 meters from private property and not in protected natural reserves. That’s due to Norway’s ‘Allemannsretten’ (or Right to Roam) law, which gives everyone the right to access nature for free.

Top advantages of traveling Norway by campervan include:

    • Incredible flexibility to detour easily for waterfalls, hikes, or fjord cruises.
    • Cost-effective: saves you hotel bills in an expensive country.
    • Access to remote wilderness with built-in comfort.
    • Countless scenic stopovers and serviced campgrounds.

    Campsite recommendations for this itinerary:

    • Oslo: Ekeberg Camping green space near the city
    • Stavanger: Mosvangen Camping near the city
    • Bergen: Lone Camping close to the fjords
    • Trondheim: Flakk Camping by the fjord
    • Tromso: Tromso Lodge & Camping nature setting near city

    Weather and Climate in Norway

Both latitude and elevation affect the weather in Norway. The summer months of June to August bring milder weather, long daylight hours (up to 24-hour sunlight north of the Arctic Circle) and a chance to see the Midnight Sun, while the winter season delivers snowy roads and Northern Lights.

Here’s a brief summary of what you can expect weather-wise in Norway’s summer season:

    • Southern coast (Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen): Mild, damp, 15 to 25ºC (59 to 77ºF) in summer.
    • Northern Norway (Tromso): Fresh mountain air, stunning Arctic light, 8 to 15ºC (47 to 59ºF).
    • Central regions (Trondheim): Cooler, with crisp mornings, similar temperatures to Northern Norway but often slightly warmer.

Always check the local Norway weather forecast and up-to-date Norway road conditions before driving mountain passes or coastal tunnels.

Best Time of Year to Visit Norway

If you’re wondering what the best time of year to visit Norway is, we recommend that the ideal period for this 10 day Norway itinerary in a campervan is any time from May through to September. That’s because late spring, summer and early fall offer the mildest weather, open roads and longer daylight hours.

Here’s what you can expect from May to September:

    • May to June: Blossoming wildflowers, fewer tourists, calm roads.
    • July to August: Warmest weather and open hiking trails.
    • September: Autumn colors, affordable rentals, and quieter routes.

Although the winter snow can be beautiful, the coldest season sees harsh weather in many regions across Norway, leading to road closures and travel disruption. Some tourist attractions are also closed during winter and driving can be dangerous in certain regions.

If you’re worried about missing out on your chance to see the Northern Lights in Norway, you’ll be pleased to know that venturing above the Arctic circle (such as to the city of Tromso) in mid to late-September will give you a brilliant chance to view these dancing lights in the sky without winter road closures.

Day 4: Stavanger and Preikestolen Pulpit Rock

Welcome to day four of your 10-day Norway road trip itinerary! Today, one of Norway's most famous hikes awaits. Take the morning to stroll the wooden houses in Old Stavanger, before driving to the Preikestolen trailhead, which takes approximately one hour, including the Lysefjord ferry.

The 8 km round trip trail to Pulpit Rock (or Preikestolen) offers breathtaking views of the Lysefjord from just over 600 metres above the water. We recommend allowing 4 to 5 hours total for this outdoor adventure.

After hiking, return to Stavanger or stay at a camping area near the trailhead for a quiet mountain evening.

Day 5: Stavanger to Bergen 210 km / 5 hours

Take the E39 north for one of Norway's most scenic coastal drives including two short ferry crossings at Arsvagen to Mortavika and Sandvikvag to Halhjem.

En route stops to explore include Haugesund, the birthplace of Viking kings, and the Hardanger area, for stunning waterfalls and orchards.

Optional: Try local specialities like reindeer stew or fish soup!

In the late afternoon, begin driving north toward Mo i Rana (approximately 450 km). Overnight there or along the way if you need a rest.

Here, you can marvel at the striking modern architecture of the Arctic Cathedral, admire the sweeping Arctic views from Mount Storsteinen Cable Car, view Arctic marine life and polar exhibits at Polaria Aquarium, and see the Northern Lights or Midnight Sun (depending on the season).

For your return, you can fly from Tromso if your rental agency allows you to drop your campervan off here. Alternatively, you can plan a multi-day return drive. If you’re driving, the full E6 journey can be spread comfortably over three to four days with stunning landscapes along the way.
