All About Romsdalsfjord
Surrounded by snowy mountains and picturesque hiking trails, Norway’s ninth-largest fjord, Romsdalsfjord, is a truly spectacular natural wonder. Romsdalsfjord is unique in that the fjord has several islands and a rich variety of fish species, with around 68 species in total.
This 88-kilometer long fjord flows past charming Norwegian villages and glistening glacial lakes towards a collection of small rocky islands that shelter it from the Atlantic Ocean. One of many incredible fjords in Norway, the mighty Romsdalsfjord flows into several run-off fjord arms and branches, with its deepest point of 500 meters lying close to the town of Molde.
An island named Veøya, meaning ‘holy island’, lies at the place where the three main branches of Romsdalsfjord meet. An important medieval trading point between Trondheim and Bergen, Veøya is now home to a fascinating museum, historic church and free-roaming sheep! Here, you can see incredible views of the expansive Romsdalsfjord spanning across the horizon.
Where is Romsdalsfjord?
Located on the southwestern coast, Romsdalsfjord sits (unsurprisingly!) in the heart of Fjord Norway. On the very western edge of the country, Romsdalsfjord lies between the cities of Trondheim (to the north) and Bergen (to the south). Part of the Romsdal district in Møre og Romsdal county, this magnificent fjord flows through several municipalities, including Alesund, Vestnes, Rauma and Molde.
How to Get to Romsdalsfjord
Reaching Romsdalsfjord from the nearest big city, Trondheim, takes around 4 hours and 30 minutes via the E6 and E136. Another option is to drive along the E39, which takes around 4 hours and 50 minutes and includes a ferry along the way. Keep in mind that both routes require tolls
From the Norwegian capital of Oslo, the drive will take around 5 hours and 45 minutes via the E6 and E136. The route from Oslo to Romsdalsfjord also has tolls along the way.
